Kolkata Knight Riders were unarguably one of the most talented sides last season in the Indian Premier League. Having won the tournament twice already, they come into the 10th edition looking mighty strong to repeat their previous feats. KKR did not have a great year in the last IPL edition. They finished fifth in the points table and they would like to reverse their fortunes this time. The team is set. We just hope that the spread the magic like they did in 2012 and 2014. The team has got a pretty well balanced squad, which didn’t succumb to injuries that often. In the 15 innings he played, he managed to score 501 runs, making him the fourth highest scorer in the league. His opening partner Robin Uthappa did a great job in supporting his teammate, as his runs tally stands at 394 runs, Apart from them, Yusuf Pathan too did a terrific job, who scored 361 runs in 13 innings. Having single-handedly taken his side to wins on more than one occasion, we can certainly expect Pathan to play for the Riders next season too.
It is certainly hard to pinpoint where it all went wrong for them, but it is fair to say that they played as a team and went down as a team last season. Their bowling attack has been quite impressive, given that it boasts of spinners such as Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla, who share 22 wickets among them. Andre Russell remained to be the highest wicket taker with 15 wickets, while Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav remained at 10 wickets each. Shakib Al Hasan didn’t really prove his worth as an all rounder last season.
This year again, the batting department will be led by Gautam Gambhir with the likes of Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav, Andre Russell, Robin Uthappa, Shakib-Al-Hasan and Yusuf Pathan providing the much-needed backup. The bowling department has the likes of Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla, Umesh Yadav. The release of Morne Morkel was a surprise as he was the pace spearhead for the team. The team name Laxmipathy Balaji as their bowling coach.
In the recently concluded auctions, the team has managed to rope in Trent Boult, Chris Woakes, Darren Bravo. The acquisitions are expected to lend the team balance. Talking about the prospects, Trent Boult is a great bowler and will be keen to prove his credentials in the IPL. Chris Woakes is a promising and talented all-rounder and his abilities to contribute with both bat and ball will be much needed. Darren bravo, the classy left-hand batsman from West Indies is also an aggressive player who likes to dominate and his addition will enable the team to experiment with the squad in terms of batting order.
